What is an End-Of-Life Practitioner?
An End-of-Life Practitioner is a person who assists in the dying process, similar to how a midwife or doula does with the birthing process. An End-of-Life Practitioner (ELP) is trained as a Death Midwife, a non-medical professional trained to provide non-medical support & comfort to the dying person and their loved ones in the final days, weeks, and months of life. An ELP is also highly trained in skills that involve providing practical, psychological, social, and spiritual support for the dying and their caregivers. An ELP is more akin to a Death Midwife, vs a Death Doula due to the advanced skillset and training acquired.
Their services are often directed toward the following:
- Helping families to restore the sacredness to the process of dying and cope with death
- Providing respite to exhausted caregivers
- Bringing deep meaning to the dying experience
- ELP’s are competent in Advocating & Counseling
- End-of-Life care practices (ie: vigils, end-of-life rituals, in-home funerals, Yoga Nidra) Each ELP will bring their own unique services to the table based on their training.
